FB Jewish Genealogy Portal:
Rob Moshein According to the HISTORY: Jews were conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army, including the part of Congress Poland under Imperial Russian government. This started in the 1820s. Military service was for 20 years, however families were housed and children educated at State expense, plus there was a generous pension and civil privileges after service. This made service attractive to some Jewish men. The number of Jews to be conscripted was drastically increased during the War with Japan in 1905, to about 1/3 of Jewish men of age and fit (this was higher than the ratio for the non Jewish rate, but still not much higher) thus many Jews chose to leave, including my Grandfather, with his father and three brothers. SO, it is "possible" that he had served in the military, but "Tailor" was a skill that had to be learned by apprenticeship, and while "possible" it is unlikely that someone with military experience in the Cavalry would have become a tailor. He had experience to have had a better job.

Podbrzezie (Podbrzeź, Podberezie, Brzozy, lit. Paberžės, Russian Паберже, Пабярже), a town on the Dawle stream, 30 km north of the center of Vilnius, 13 km northeast of Mejszagoła. In the mid-1880s it had 67 houses and 1,119 inhabitants. The former wooden Catholic church once belonged to the Giedrojecki deanery. See. SGKPIKS, vol. 8, Warsaw 1887, pp. 364-365. Since Jacko Wiesztortowicz issued a last will in October 1484 for a testamentary record for the church in Mejszagole, the information contained in SGKPIKS that the church in Podbrzezie was built in 1484 seems to be incorrect. If a new church existed in the time of making the will, it would probably have been equipped by Wiesztort. Similarly, if he was in a building. However, it was impossible to build a church in November and December. See. also: MTL N-35-39 Вильнюс.56

In Lithuania, tobacco processing companies started to be established in the beginning of 19th century.
1828 A tobacco manufactory is established in Vilnius (30 workers), but after the competition of Riga companies went bankrupt, another manufactory was founded in 1833.
1858 A cigar manufacturing company (35 workers) was established in Kaunas.
1865 The Shishman and Duruncha Tobacco Manufactory (one of the largest industrial companies in Vilnius at that time) was opened in Vilnius, and the L. Edelstein Tobacco Processing Company in 1869.
In 1870 there were 7 tobacco companies in Lithuania (135 workers), 1880 - 10 companies (837 workers), 1899 - 14 companies (716 workers). One factory was operating in Klaipėda region (150 workers). Before World War I, there were about 20 tobacco processing companies (employing about 500 workers). The raw materials brought by hand were made mainly of machorka, cigars and cheap papyrus.
Part of the production was exported. After World War I, the tobacco industry was concentrated in Kaunas, in 1922 there were 9 factories, the largest being the Solomon Brothers tobacco and papyrus (founded in 1918), O. Iserl.
There was a big factory in Vilnius, 2 factories in Klaipeda and one tobacco workshop in Panevezys.
1926 Filters without filters are launched at the Salomon Brothers factory; Cigar was produced in Kaunas until 1940. In 1927 there were 12 companies (730 workers) in Lithuania, 1937 - 9 companies (590 workers).

They were developing and even in the city center. One of the larger factories was Arklių str. It was a session no. 1861, retiring to Arklių g. Large building. There was a Karaim Shishman and Durunch tobacco factory. It was one of the largest and stood in the very center of the city. 1875 a plan for extending the streets was drawn up. The building was to be demolished, but since the current Astoria hotel was also included in the demolition line, the city authorities refused to do so because the landlord would have had to pay an exorbitant amount.
