FB Jewish Genealogy Portal:
Rob Moshein According to the HISTORY: Jews were conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army, including the part of Congress Poland under Imperial Russian government. This started in the 1820s. Military service was for 20 years, however families were housed and children educated at State expense, plus there was a generous pension and civil privileges after service. This made service attractive to some Jewish men. The number of Jews to be conscripted was drastically increased during the War with Japan in 1905, to about 1/3 of Jewish men of age and fit (this was higher than the ratio for the non Jewish rate, but still not much higher) thus many Jews chose to leave, including my Grandfather, with his father and three brothers. SO, it is "possible" that he had served in the military, but "Tailor" was a skill that had to be learned by apprenticeship, and while "possible" it is unlikely that someone with military experience in the Cavalry would have become a tailor. He had experience to have had a better job.

Podbrzezie (Podbrzeź, Podberezie, Brzozy, lit. Paberžės, Russian Паберже, Пабярже), a town on the Dawle stream, 30 km north of the center of Vilnius, 13 km northeast of Mejszagoła. In the mid-1880s it had 67 houses and 1,119 inhabitants. The former wooden Catholic church once belonged to the Giedrojecki deanery. See. SGKPIKS, vol. 8, Warsaw 1887, pp. 364-365. Since Jacko Wiesztortowicz issued a last will in October 1484 for a testamentary record for the church in Mejszagole, the information contained in SGKPIKS that the church in Podbrzezie was built in 1484 seems to be incorrect. If a new church existed in the time of making the will, it would probably have been equipped by Wiesztort. Similarly, if he was in a building. However, it was impossible to build a church in November and December. See. also: MTL N-35-39 Вильнюс.56

It was one of the largest and stood in the very center of the city. 1875 a plan for extending the streets was drawn up. The building was to be demolished, but since the current Astoria hotel was also included in the demolition line, the city authorities refused to do so because the landlord would have had to pay an exorbitant amount.
